The Korean Composer Lee Haeshik studies Korean traditional music, because he wants to write his music unlike the traditional music. His work <Hαedongsingok 海東新曲>(1979) is a symphonic poem in which musicians play 16 different traditional Korean instruments. This essay is concerned with the content of this work in which the program music is divided in the movements “Taedong(太動 huge movement)ㆍYeak(禮樂 ceremony and joy)ㆍJeongae(展開 development)". Lee Haeshik uses various tone colors and variation of melodies for preparing the final melody, a Dangiok(唐笛 a flute) solo. Showing how beautiful a modem piece of Korean music with traditional instruments can be, <Hαedongsingok> appears as a successful experiment for a new music with Korean traditional instruments.
